Bariis iyo hilib (Rice and meat)

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups basmati rice, rinsed
  • 2 ½ cups water or broth
  • 1 lb beef or chicken, cubed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

  • Cook Meat: Heat oil in a pot. Add meat, season with salt and pepper, and brown for 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • Cook Rice: In the same pot, sauté onion until soft. Add rice, water or broth, cumin, and browned meat. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low, cover, and simmer 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve: Fluff rice and serve with grilled or stewed meat on the side.
